Hivos seeks qualified candidates for the position of Freelance Writer for Storytelling Article on Open Contracting.

Background

Hivos and ARTICLE 19 are currently implementing the Civic Engagement for Open Contracting program that supports independent journalists, activists, businesses and civic society organizations in their efforts to use contracting data and public revenue flows for public scrutiny, campaigns and translate it into meaningful information for citizens. It aims to have the Government of Indonesia both at the national and subnational level initiate access to information reform to improve local conditions for efficiency, effectiveness and integrity of public contracting as well as to create/improve mechanisms for oversight authorities to respond to and act upon public feedback related to public contracting.

In Indonesia, Open Contracting program work as an ecosystem and closely work with 5 organizations at the national level and subnational level. We work both with local governments and the community in Semarang, Bantul, Bojonegoro, and West Nusa Tenggara.

As one of the strategy of open contracting, Hivos works through evidence-based advocacy to promote transparency in public procurement practices. With the program ending in 2020, Hivos requires support to write the outcomes achieved by the project into storytelling articles and narratives.

The freelance consultant will work closely with Communication & Knowledge Management Officer of Open Contracting program who will provide guideline and ensure articles are in line with Hivos communication guidelines and share Hivos values of humanity and has captured the most significant changes of the project carried out by partners from a storytelling perspective.

Roles and Responsibilities

The consultant is expected to:

1. To produce storytelling articles in Indonesian and/or English based on the outcome achieved of the program with the following requirements:

  • a maximum of 700-word each
  • using human interest perspective by capturing stories from community and local / national government on the impact of transparency, participation, and accountability through applying the open contracting principles
  • using data as a part of the story

2. To produce infographic to support the article (optional)

  • The infographic will use a different set of data from the article to avoid redundancy

Knowledge and Requirements

The requirements for the Candidate are the followings:

  • Indonesian nationals only;
  • Have good writing skills;
  • Experience in writing stories with human-interest perspective; English and/or Indonesian;
  • Experience in transparency issue is an advantage;
  • Ability to work independently and take initiatives, but also a team worker;
  • Knowledge of major software applications (Excel, Word);
  • Active, dynamic, have willingness and eagerness to learn new ideas;
  • Will report to the Communication and Knowledge Management Officer Open Contracting Program;
  • Experience in writing for not-for-profit organization and/or knowledge in outcome harvesting process is an advantage;
  • Basic skills and understanding creative content creation, including simple graphic design tools is an advantage.

Contract type

The candidate will be working as a freelance consultant. The period of service will be for 6 months from March – August 2020.

The consultant can work remotely with regular meeting with the Open Contracting team.
