Title                      :  Project Support Consultant VCA

Duty Station       :  Jakarta, Indonesia

Report to             :  VCA Country Engagement Manager

Duration              :  April to September 2023

Background

The mean global temperature has increased by +1.1 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial baseline with increasingly frequent and extreme climatic events, threatening to drive another 100 million people into poverty by 2030. COVID-19 may greatly exacerbate these impacts, resulting in significant backsliding against the Sustainable Development Goals. Climate change affects the enjoyment of indivisible, interdependent and interrelated human rights, hitting the most vulnerable, the hardest and threatening to increase existing inequalities. Civil society needs to engage and have a voice to influence climate change policies. Business as usual will no longer suffice and is no longer appropriate.

In response, an alliance of 6 organizations: WWF Netherlands, Hivos, SouthSouthNorth, Akina Mama wa Afrika, Shack Dwellers International, Fundacion Avina have joined hands to create the “Voices for Just Climate Action”. The program is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the “Power of Voices” framework. The five-year strategic objective of the alliance is “By 2025, local civil society groups have claimed a central role as empowered innovators, facilitators and advocates of climate solutions”. We intend to build wide societal support for locally shaped climate solutions through an inclusive and rights-based approach. This includes building a broad-based climate alliance at country and local level, bridging divides (urban-rural, gender, youth), that amplifies voices in new, unusual ways.

In Indonesia, Voices for Just Climate Action aims to amplify the voices especially in relation to the following thematic outcomes areas:

  • Local civil society and marginal groups’ capacity and collective action are strengthened for inclusive policy dialogue and leadership for climate solutions.
  • Powerful narrative and shared platform established to effectively amplify the voice of local and national level civil society for just transition.
  • Locally-shaped climate solutions (including local food systems, decentralized renewable energy, new financial schemes, technology innovation and access, local knowledge and wisdom, governance of natural resources) are documented, formally recognized and adopted

The programme in Indonesia will focus on the national and local level especially starting from the targeted area with the urban and rural settings such as Jakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. In East Nusa Tenggara, the program is being implemented by Yayasan Hivos in collaboration with four coalition partners, namely Koalisi ADAPTASI, Koalisi SIPIL, Koalisi KOPI, dan Koalisi Pangan Baik
