Yayasan Humanis seeks qualified candidates for the position of Consultant for Videographer and Graphic Editor (Indonesian nationals only).

Background

Yayasan Humanis dan Inovasi Sosial (an affiliated organization of Hivos) is an organization who supports the development of alternative solutions to deep seated problems so that individuals and communities can make responsible and equitable choices within political and economic systems that serve their needs. In 2020-2023, the organization implements a project called CREATE (Creative Youth for Tolerance) that aims to improve pluralism and tolerance in secondary education institutions (high schools) in West Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi funded by USAID Indonesia. The program adopts an innovative art and cultural based approach to strengthen tolerance among students, and enhance the role of parents, teachers, and art facilitators to support tolerance practice in school.

A baseline study was carried out in six public high schools in Bandung and Bogor (West Java), Gowa (South Sulawesi), as well as Malang and Surabaya (East Java), using a mixed-method approach, combining desk study, online interview and focused group discussions (FGDs), as well as online survey research to provide a solid foundation for the CREATE program. The baseline study explored three questions regarding the nature and level of tolerance in school, capacities and modalities for tolerance in school, and “school-from-home” during the pandemic. At the end of the study, the baseline study found that, despite encouraging tolerance and pluralism values and efforts to support the minority groups, schools provided little room for exploring and in-depth discussions on the issue of tolerance and pluralism. This may be related to another finding that school community members, particularly teachers and students, had limited understanding on the issue of tolerance: they still understood tolerance as a reciprocal action of “respecting” each other, without considering factors such as power relationships among different groups.

Supporting the baseline study, a gender analysis was conducted to provide the complete picture of how intolerance and discrimination affects women and men groups differently, to answer what does this have to do related with pursuing equality. Women in the Vortex of Intolerance and Discrimination in Indonesia provides narrative to explain how women’s groups and people with non-ninary gender identity are more vulnerable to acts of intolerance than men, and how women groups face limited opportunity due to double or even triple burden they experience in the pandemic. The analysis aims to improve project implementation to be more gender responsive, pursuing acknowledgement, protection, and fulfillment of rights of women in preserving tolerance in secondary education environments.
