Report to          : Communication Officer & Program Manager Creative Youth for Tolerance (CREATE)

Duration           : 3 (three) months – February 2023 to April 2023

  1. Background

The Creative Youth for Tolerance (CREATE) program aims to improve tolerance in schools by strengthening tolerance practices among students and enhancing the role of parents and school committees in supporting tolerance practices. CREATE adopts an innovative arts and culture-based approach as an entry point for efforts to promote tolerance in secondary education institutions (high schools), enhancing the capacity and will among young people to constructively manage differences, and providing a counterweight to the intolerant messaging students get from other sources.

CREATE is an initiative of the Yayasan Hivos which is inspired by humanist values, in collaboration with Rombak Media, Perkumpulan Pamflet Generasi, Lembaga Advokasi dan Pendidikan Anak Rakyat (LAPAR), and YIFoS Indonesia, with support from The United States Agency for International Development (USAID). CREATE facilitates multi-actor collaboration and partnerships to address religious, ethnic, gender, and disability tolerance and inclusivity in Indonesia. CREATE responds directly to the problem of intolerance in schools, using an innovative approach. This approach is supported by the engagement of key elements of the educational community: parents, teachers, school committees, Government of Indonesia as a policy maker, non-profit organizations, and academics.

CREATE is mainly implemented in the provinces of West Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi where research has identified high levels of violations of religious freedom, as well as significant numbers of local regulations (Perda) that are discriminatory toward women and minorities. In addition, CREATE has also approached several schools in DKI Jakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Kalimantan.

For the last three years, CREATE has been working with high schools in the three provinces (West Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi) to organize many activities. These activities include policymakers’ meetings, workshops, training, and various capacity-building activities aimed at school students, parents, and teachers.

For example, the CREATE program and partners in three regions held the “Youth Challenge,” an art competition program that carries the values of tolerance and diversity. In this activity, the students were first given the material on tolerance, diversity, gender equality, and social inclusion. Then, at the end of a series of activities, students (groups or individually) are assigned to create artwork using their chosen media. Afterward, the artworks were collected and exhibited in an activity called “CREATE Moments,” an art exhibition for students.

Parents’ Participation is one of CREATE’s agendas that focuses on increasing the capacity of parents to promote and monitor tolerance and pluralism practices in schools. At the end of the series of activities, parents monitor by providing recommendations to the school to realize a tolerant and non-violent school.

Meanwhile, for teachers, CREATE held a Teacher Training themed “Teachers Build Peace: Collaboration for Tolerance.” This activity focuses on school teachers, the most intimate people to students. From this activity, teachers, as participants, are encouraged to be able to create programs and carry out creative activities with students to support the socialization of diversity and tolerance in the school.

In order to record good practices and lessons learned during the three years of the Program, CREATE intends to produce a documentary video explaining the CREATE program as a whole.

CREATE Program is looking for a team of consultants to collaborate with in producing these videos. Videos will be used as a reference for CREATE Program, Yayasan Hivos, and partners during induction, implementation, and learning events. Videos will also be available as public resources on the Yayasan Hivos social media platforms.
