Consultant of Media Fellowship and Media Engagement

Hivos Southeast Asia is an International non-governmental organization guided by humanist values. It aims at structural poverty alleviation with a strong focus on civil society building and sustainable economic development. Hivos Southeast Asia provides financial support for local NGOs, is active in networking, lobbying and exchanging knowledge and expertise. For its Hivos Southeast Asia (Hivos SEA) seeks qualified Indonesian candidates, both individually and as a group for the position of Consultant of Media Fellowship and Media Engagement.


Strategic Partnership Green and Inclusive Energy (GIE) is a programme that is initiated by Hivos, supported by the Netherlands’ Government, to enable more civil society organizations to do lobby and advocacy in the area of Green and Inclusive Energy. The programme was started since 2016, where in Indonesia, it involves three national CSOs as the core team of the programme, and designed to outreach non-energy CSOs, media, and wider public, including the Government on Green and Inclusive Energy.

We believe that media has an important role not only through their impact, but also their technical capacity to influence many people. Therefore, media fellowship and engagement need to be done. Building the journalists’ capacity and engaging media will strengthen them on the topics of Green and Inclusive Energy. Therefore, Hivos supports journalists through a media fellowship and engagement to improve the advocacy and awareness raising of Green and Inclusive Energy.


  • Media fellowship

    • The key objective is to increase capacity of journalists and Hivos GIE’s partners to advocate and raise awareness on GIE through media reports on GIE
    • To enhance the capacity in writing/reporting skills in general, and specifically on Renewable Energy.
    • To create platform that enables journalists to share about green and inclusive energy in media, and our partners with their various stakeholder
    • To enable journalists to dig deeper into different stories around Renewable Energy.
  • Media engagement

The media engagement consists of media gathering and briefing. The objectives are as follows:

  • Media fellowship

    • A training plan and reading material
    • A variety of classes/ sessions, including article writing training
    • Training implementation in three regions
    • A short video (for further discussion on the content)
    • Participants’ pre- and post-tests
    • Network and relationship with the media
    • Narrative report
  • Media engagement

    • Media gathering activity, materials (stories, handout), and visibility
    • Media briefing implementation, media kit
    • Network and relationship with the media
    • Narrative report



All materials and activity must contain and consider Renewable Energy and includes gender relevance, as well as linkages with political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal angles.

The article writing training technique should also be in line with Hivos’ articles guidelines.



The fellowship shall involve 15 (fifteen) journalists in total. They consist of 5 (five) journalists from various media houses from 3 (three) regions in Indonesia.

Balance among participants should be taken into account in terms of gender, age, and distribution of media type.


Timeline and planning

A series of activities, which includes article writing training: 3 (three) days in each region

The overall timeline is as follows:

  • July to September : Media fellowship
  • October to December : Media gathering, Media briefing, evaluation



  • Individual, team or organizations are eligible to apply.
  • At least 3 years of working experience with the media in Indonesia.
  • Ability to engage media and journalists.
  • An in-depth understanding and experience on journalism capacity in article writing on Renewable Energy.
  • Knowledge of and current topics on green and inclusive energy, as well as Hivos’ approach.
  • Capacity to produce training materials.
  • Able to travel to conduct training and other relevant activities in Indonesia.
