About the Project

The project is a new four-year proposed initiative led by Yayasan Humanis dan Inovasi Sosial (Humanis) with three (3) implementing partners, aiming to increase gender equality and women’s leadership in climate mitigation and adaptation in Indonesia.

Women and girls in Indonesia are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis but are often excluded from participation in and leadership of climate action. The project supports 60+ women’s rights organizations and grassroots women’s groups, 2000+ feminist leaders and 6000+ direct beneficiaries, including Indigenous women, women with disabilities, smallholder farmers, fisherwomen, and women environmental defenders in urban and rural (coastal, forest and peatland) areas. It will be implemented across 13 climate-vulnerable districts in 8 provinces (Yogyakarta, Central Java, Bali, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, West Java, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi) and at national level.

The project theory of change builds on an extensive consultation process with women leaders and their organizations, as well as the project partners’ expertise, experience, and the priorities of the constituencies they represent. The project will deliver three intermediate outcomes to achieve its ultimate outcome:

  1. Strengthened capacity, safety, resilience, and collaboration of women’s rights organizations and feminist leaders;
  2. Enhanced ability of women’s groups and leaders to design and lead innovative climate solutions that support resilience and sustainable livelihoods (such as agroforestry, mangrove restoration, and peatland protection); and
  3. Increased integration of gender equality and women’s leadership in national and sub-national climate planning, policy, and financing.

Together, these outcomes reinforce one another. Strong, resilient organizations and networks create confident leaders; women-led climate innovations create evidence and impact; and policy influence institutionalizes long-term change towards inclusive, gender-responsive governance. Through this, women’s participation and leadership become normalized, valued, and embedded in Indonesia’s climate action landscape, resulting in more inclusive, effective and sustainable outcomes that contribute to poverty reduction
